Action from FDP session - Mindfulness and Emotional Resilience

I was thrilled to be invited to be a part of the Faculty Development Program of Anjuman College of Hotel and Tourism Management Studies and Research.  This program is spread over a week and has other external faculty like myself, who are covering different aspects of the theme "Wellness to Wisdom".

All the faculty invited for this Program

I opted for the topic, Mindfulness and Emotional Resilience for Educators.  The challenge - only two and a half hours to cover such a fascinating and deep topic.  I had a further discussion to understand how this topic came up, and based on this, I put the components of my session together.

Through facilitator led discussions, I covered how emotions can create distortion of reality and facts, what emotional resilience contains, the difference that a Growth Mindset can make, the fallacy of multi-tasking and it's links to stress and productivity, mindfulness and got them to practice a mindfulness journaling exercise.

The faculty participants marvelously did their part of being student learners, with insightful questions and comments.  They made the session more interesting and impactful, especially when they took up a specific action to put into practice.

Pics from Stress Management Workshop

Here are a few pics of a workshop on Stress Management that I conducted for my client in the BFSI space.

The participants from the middle and junior levels from different functions of the organization.  I am thankful for their whole-hearted participation in the exercises and for their insightful questions during the workshop, which made the entire experience wonderful both for them and for me.

While they identified the causes of stress on their own, I shared with them a guided meditation exercise, and a journaling method  both of which they found very useful.

Reviewing the Causes of Stress

Journaling

While they built their action play, they also shared on the sticky wall, specific things they will put into practice.

Choosing your Mood - Every Day, Every Time

This post is about choosing our moods on a daily basis.

Some times we do it consciously, but most days we are reacting.

The above image (image sourced from Pinterest) got me thinking.  Some thoughts about this interesting image (you can substitute the word 'mood' for the word 'chair') :

1) Which of these chairs did you spend the maximum amount of time last week?
2) Which other chairs did you occupy during the week?
3) Which chair would you justify your choice the most, perhaps subconsciously?
4) In this week, which chairs would you intentionally like to spend the most time?
4a) In this week, which chairs would you intentionally like to AVOID spending the most time?
4b) What exactly will you do about these intentions?

Post your responses if you are comfortable, or don't.

Definitely do reflect on them and have a wonderful week.

Fighting Burnout with Strengths

Most employees across the world are facing burnout.  Many of them are asking and taking breaks, and some employers are responding positively to such requests. Some opt for medication under prescription.

There is another way - leverage your strengths for this.

From the article: "The most effective coping mechanisms people use involve positively adjusting how they think about or interpret their workplace stressors."

Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime

Fascinating read on the importance giving downtime to your brain on a regular basis instead of just being extremely busy in the pursuit of your goals. This reminded me of Tom Hodgkinson's book 'How to be Idle' which has mentioned these ideas sans the research (which probably wasn't available).

From the article:"Throughout history people have intuited that such puritanical devotion to perpetual busyness does not in fact translate to greater productivity and is not particularly healthy. What if the brain requires substantial downtime to remain industrious and generate its most innovative ideas? "Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets," essayist Tim Kreider wrote in The New York Times. "The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration—it is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done."

Songs of Resilience

 Songs of Resilience.

---------------------

Mondays (and a few special other days) sometimes can be really tough and knock us down really hard. Coming back the next day is a challenge at times. So we use difference tools to build our #resiliency to these days. Some of us use music.

Here's one of my favourite tracks, particularly since it brings a lot of energy back. I have shared the lyrics version to make it easier to understand the words.

Check it out here

If #music is what you use to bounce back, please share your favourite track / tune.

Article: Can we ban Normal, Please

An article that has been needed always, but now in current times, more than ever.

From the article -"When we want someone to accept something new we know they are going resist, we tell them it’s normal. 2020 is a great example of this."

We must have the courage to stay true to our strengths, and use them to benefit ourselves and others.

Plan for "The 7 types of rest that every person needs"

We're heading into 2022 in a couple of days.

As we make our plans, let's also plan to take rest for us.  The rest, is not just sleep, according to the article / Ted Talk by .  Rest should equal restoration in seven key areas of your life.

From the article "We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep — but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. The result is a culture of high-achieving, high-producing, chronically tired and chronically burned-out individuals. We’re suffering from a rest deficit because we don’t understand the true power of rest."

7 ways emotionally intelligent people handle workplace pressure

Here's an excellent article on one of my favourite topics "Emotional Intelligence".

https://www.fastcompany.com/90385601/7-ways-emotionally-intelligent-people-handle-workplace-pressure

A line from the article is given below:
"We feel before we think. When our emotions overwhelm us, we are in danger of reacting from our emotions."
